Well actually we had a few other stops along the way. We made it to suburban Pittsburgh on the first night (our second Walmart) and then somewhere in southern Virginia on the second night (third Walmart).
But before we continued on to Florida we opted to make a little detour to Asheville and the Great Smoky Mountains.
Our first night in Asheville was quite warm, and so we decided to de-winterize the plumbing. Our first RV shower! Sadly the factory shower head left a lot to be desired, and delivered more of a trickle than a shower. Unfortunately we may have been a little premature, the next night as we headed for GSM National Park the temperature started dipping, and it hit a couple degrees below freezing overnight. Here we got to learn about tank heaters and just how little battery power our RV actually has. One great ‘feature’ is the CO alarms starts beeping incessantly when it senses the battery is low and there is no way to silence it!
Anyway we survived that and a semi-frozen water hose the next night in Asheville before hitting the road again and making our way to Yemassee, SC home of the South Point RV Resort, part of the Thousand Trails system. When we first started looking into campgrounds the name Thousand Trails came up a lot, and we decided a one year membership could pay off for us. We spent three nights here, the first day visiting Savannah GA which is about 45 minutes away by car.
We rented a car before getting to South Point so we’d have some other way to get around than the motorhome. The temperature was now a little more reasonable, high teens low 20s, so we opted to leave misty alone in the motorhome for the first time. We had invested in a temperature monitoring system so we were pretty confident we’d know if it was too hot or cold for her. We checked it throughout the day and sure enough she did just fine, but we said to each other a couple of times throughout the day, you know Misty would have been fine to come with us. Savannah was neat but we found it repetitive after a while and were ready to head back by 3pm or so.
